Former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (retd.), don yan say no repentant Boko Haram fighter fit dey recruited into Nigerian Armed Forces.
Irabor talk this one during interview for Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. Him yan say the idea say former Boko Haram members dey enter military na false talk.
“How dem go take recruit dem? This thing no dey exist for military,” Irabor talk.
The retired general wey don serve as Theatre Commander for Operation Lafiya Dole, later become Force Commander for Multinational Taskforce, then Chief of Defence Training and Operations before him appointment as CDS, yan say from him experience, this kind recruitment no fit happen.
“Before I become CDS, I don dey command Operation Lafiya Dole. From there, I cross go become Force Commander, then I become Chief of Defence Training and Operations dey oversee everything. After that I become Theatre Commander and finally CDS for two and half years. How person go believe say dem fit recruit ex-Boko Haram? I no sabi,” Irabor add.
Him also explain say even normal military recruitment need clearance from local government, and na serious process e be. So, no way ex-terrorist go slip enter army.
“Na impossible. You no fit join military if your local government never approve you,” him talk.
Irabor clarify say Operation Safe Corridor na the programme wey dey deradicalise and reintegrate low-risk ex-Boko Haram fighters back into normal civilian life, e no dey involve joining armed forces.
E admit say government still get work to do to fight insecurity nationwide, but reject talk say wahala dey because security agencies dey fail. According to am, better manpower, proper equipment, and clear understanding of security situation go help fight insurgency better.
In recent years, Federal Government don dey push Operation Safe Corridor strong to help ex-Boko Haram fighters wey surrender voluntarily to start life afresh as civilians.
